Each month we profile one of the Azure Global Team. This month we are speaking to our Customer Service Manager, Nicole Adams.

How long have you worked in the Payroll world?

I have worked in the payroll industry since I left school! For the last two years, I have been leading our Customer Service Team across the UK, primarily dealing with our contractor’s queries.

What do you feel your strengths are?

I try to create a good culture in my team so that everyone feels comfortable and happy in their roles. My team are very supportive of each other, despite being spread across the country and I believe this helps us all to do a better job.

What do you feel is an important part of your role?

I think the most important part of the role is to provide excellent service to our agencies and contractors in every single interaction they have with Azure Global.

What challenges have you faced?

2020 was just one big challenge! The last year has been really challenging, getting to know a new team, and new systems whilst everyone was stuck in their homes across the country. We survived though!

What is the best thing about working for Azure Global?

It’s the people, even though we are spread across the country, we still have a strong bond and get on well together. We are looking forward to when we can finally all meet up and celebrate.

Tell us more about you, Nicole!

I enjoy keeping fit and can often be found pounding the pavements on my lunch hour or using the office treadmill and kettlebells. I have also recently bought my first home with my partner so I’m always on Pinterest looking for inspiration.

Chris joined Azure Global in November 2019 to help grow our UK business and within his first month, he secured a deal that would transform the business from a UK-only payroll company to an international HR Solutions provider.

Azure Global now has projects in Canada, Poland, Czech Republic, UAE, Ireland as well as the UK and the US. Chris has found that many agencies also have overseas interests and are keen to partner with a company that can operate compliantly in the UK and also abroad.

Umbrella payroll companies are essential to freelance workers, but there are many companies in the UK that are looking to trick their way into extra money. But how do you spot the difference?

In this blog, we give you tips on key things to look out for to ensure an umbrella company is above board.

What should I look for?

1- Established

Do your research to see if the company is established and respected in the sector to be sure you’re working with a tried-and-true company.

2- Customer Service

Ask yourself, how easy is it to get in touch with my umbrella company? Can you speak someone on the phone, or do they dodge calls and only respond to your emails with an automated message? Put your trust into companies who, at the very least, are willing to speak with you.

3- Recommendations

Look out for recommendations, or lack thereof. If the company you’re looking at has little or no recommendations, this is a bad sign.

4- Preferred supplier list

Check to see if the umbrella company is on the preferred supplier list of your employer. If not, you may want to do some more research before you make a decision on which umbrella company to go with.

5- Accreditation

Has the Umbrella received accreditation from Professional Passport? This is an indicator that the Umbrella has rigorous compliance standards

Causes for Concern

  • Lack of transparency

An untrustworthy umbrella company might have hidden tier margins or may not be willing to divulge a breakdown of your calculations. If either of these is the case, then this is a bad sign.

  • Few or no third-party accreditations

Accreditation by a third party shows that a standard of performance has been achieved and recognised by an external body. If the umbrella company doesn’t have this, are they compliant and can they be trusted?

  • Offshore arrangements or loans mentioned

This may indicate that the company use non-compliant offshore trusts with low tax jurisdiction

When choosing an umbrella company, make sure you check the points above to ensure that the company is legitimate and trusted.

People often receive payslips only to quickly throw them away or forget about them. It can feel all too easy to toss them aside after you’ve checked your payment is correct, but it’s essential that you hold on to them. If you’re wondering why it’s important to keep a hold of your payslips, keep reading and let us help you understand.

Take control of your finances.

Holding on to your payslips helps you to understand your pay which is essential if you are either a permanent employee or working under an umbrella company.

Your payslips detail very important information like pension contributions, tax, and more. Keeping a hold of your payslips and filing them appropriately will help keep you informed while also giving you control of your finances.

You need to have all your payslips to hand in order to file a self-assessment tax-return with accuracy. And if HMRC ever enquires about proof of pay or deductions, then you’ll have everything you need at hand – even if the information you require was six months ago.

Proof of Income

You’ll need to provide payslips from the last three months as a proof of income If you are planning on buying a house, or indeed even renting. This is needed to show that you can afford your rent or mortgage payments.

Your payslips will help you to discern your maternity leave entitlement as well, if you are pregnant or preparing for maternity leave.

Payslips will also help you to understand exactly what you should be receiving for your retirement based on your pension contributions over the years.

You’ll also need proof of income in order to obtain a visa for working abroad.

How Long Should I Keep My Payslips?

HMRC recommends holding on to your payslips for 22 months (2 years), but we suggest filing your payslips and keeping them for as long as possible. This means that you can always look back to your pay at any time should you need.
